Emotional Empowerment with NLP
People often feel at the mercy of anger, sadness or a lack of fulfilment, even when they cannot name why.
TL;DR
NLP, used with emotional intelligence, is presented as a way to choose a useful state — emotionally empowered, not only emotionally intelligent — with effects on health, work and relationships.
The article in brief
The article begins with remarks people make in coaching and training: “I don’t know why I got angry”; “I am sad, and I don’t know why”; “Can you help me, I am very emotional?” The reply offered is that emotion is part of being human. Difficulty comes when a person cannot influence that state, or does not notice it in themselves or others — with costs in relationships, work and, over time, health.
Psychology has long tried to bring emotion under some kind of management. Daniel Goleman’s work on emotional intelligence in the 1990s put the subject back at the centre of talk about success. NLP is introduced here as a later, practical intervention: concerned with how a person comprehends a situation and how to move toward a desired state, rather than only dissecting the problem. Richard Bandler’s line is quoted: an attitude and methodology that leaves behind a trail of techniques.
Combined with emotional intelligence, NLP is framed as a step beyond naming feelings: techniques the writer calls an “Emotional ATM,” enabling a person to choose and occupy a useful emotional state. Benefits claimed include physical and emotional health, professional work and rewarding relationships. Goleman’s case that leaders with high emotional intelligence influence better, decide better and are more trusted is used as supporting context.
