NLP and Coaching

NLP began by modelling outstanding therapists. Coaches use those patterns to build the relationship, set goals, and work with beliefs and habits.

TL;DR

Coaching and NLP can each be practised alone. Together they give the work a structure: the relationship, the goal, change-work, and specific issues the client brings.

The article in brief

The article traces NLP to Richard Bandler and John Grinder in the early 1970s, modelling the skills of therapists including Milton Erickson, Virginia Satir and Fritz Perls. Similarities in belief, values and behaviour — and some striking differences — were replicated and then taught. Neuro names the neurological trigger of behaviour; Linguistic the words that show and can shift programmes; Programming the unconscious patterns generated through a life.

Those patterns did not stay in therapy. The piece notes their use in leadership, sales, teaching and healthcare. For coaches, NLP is treated as a toolkit for trust and openness; for goals that take in family, work and community; and for change-work on beliefs, attitudes and habits that derail success. Specific issues listed include relationships, unhelpful habits, fears such as public speaking, self-motivation and motivating others at work.

The argument is that the pairing matters: a clear coaching process plus ethical use of NLP language and technique. One can coach without NLP, and use NLP without coaching. Combined, they are presented as a stronger chemistry.
