What is Neuro-Linguistic Programming?
A high-level account of NLP, and of ANLP India’s relationship to professional NLP education in India. This page does not replace a training programme.
What is NLP?
Neuro-Linguistic Programming is a field of models and methods concerned with how people perceive, communicate and act. Practitioners often describe it as a way of studying the structure of subjective experience: how we take in the world through the senses, how language shapes that experience, and how patterns of thought and behaviour can be noticed and, where useful, changed.
People define NLP in different ways — as a communication approach, as a set of coaching tools, as a model of models. Those descriptions are not mutually exclusive. A short reading, Neuro-Linguistic Programming — An Insight, sets the three letters out in everyday language. ANLP India does not present NLP as clinically proven, medically validated, or universally accepted science. It is a professional practice tradition, taught and used with care.
Where did NLP come from?
NLP emerged in the 1970s from work associated with Richard Bandler and John Grinder, drawing on observation of effective therapists and communicators. It has since been taught, adapted and applied in many countries, including India, in education, coaching, organisational work and personal development.
How is NLP applied?
Historically, NLP has been used in coaching, communication, leadership, training, and related professional development. Applications vary with the practitioner’s training and context. ANLP India’s certification pathways included practitioner and trainer development rather than a single prescribed use.
NLP in India
NLP has been taught in India for decades, through institutes, independent trainers and professional associations. ANLP India is one such Indian association. It should not be confused with organisations that use similar names in other countries, or with other Indian bodies. Those distinctions are set out in this site’s policies.
ANLP India’s role
ANLP India provided an association identity for NLP professional education in India: programmes, trainer development, and certification pathways. Practitioners and trainers continue to work as members. NLP programmes are offered through www.NLP4India.in.
